This Symposium aims at all health care providers involved in the care of IBD patients, including nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, dieticians, in addition to physicians and gastroenterologists. It is an opportunity not to be missed to meet and discuss key topics with a highly select group of 150-180 colleagues. Learning Objectives


  1. Explain which diagnostic tests are best for the initial diagnosis of IBD.
  2. Explain how to interpret diagnostic testing when evaluating a patient for IBD.
  3. Appropriately choose the patients in whom to initiate, how to initiate, how to monitor and potential side effects of mesalamine, thiopurines and methotrexate in IBD.
  4. Describe the safety and efficacy of available biologics.
  5. Choose which biologic is appropriate for any given IBD patient.
  6. Explain the implications of the availability of biosimilars.
  7. Describe how to navigate the insurance approval for a biologic, including utilizing co-pay assistance or patient assistance programs.
  8. Explain how to take specific precautions for patients with IBD traveling abroad, including how to travel with a biologic medication.
  9. Explain a pharmacist’s role in treating and monitoring patients with IBD.
  10. Explain the standard of care for health maintenance for IBD patients with special considerations including cancer screening and immunizations for those on immune suppressive or biologic therapies.
  11. Describe the types of ostomies IBD patients might have and how to manage ostomies or complications.
