Topic is shared concepts, goals and challenges in both IBD, Inflammatory Arthritis & Ankylosing Spondylitis (RA/AS)
There are multiple shared concepts between the fields of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Inflammatory Arthritis and Askylosing Spondylitis (RA/AS). Many patients could have both gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal manifestations that require the expertise of these two fields. Both gastroenterologists and rheumatologists utilize an evidence based top-down approach positioning combination therapy with biologics and immune modulators early on in the management course. Both fields have demonstrated the value of documenting tissue healing as a goal of therapy with strong implications on the future disease course. Both disciplines are tasked with individualized therapy and have tools such as therapeutic drug monitoring to better tailor the treatments. There is a common list of available and newly developed medication options that both gastroenterologists and rheumatologists use. There is a shared need to use these options in an optimized approach and tackle the challenges that come up during the course of therapy.
